Learn to trade: forex, CFDs & MetaTrader 5, explained simply

What is forex trading?

Forex (foreign exchange) is the global marketplace for buying and selling currencies. Prices are always quoted in pairs — for example EUR/USD — because you are exchanging one currency for another. When you expect the first currency to strengthen against the second you buy the pair; when you expect it to weaken you sell. The forex market is the largest and most liquid financial market in the world, trading around the clock from Monday to Friday.

Traders follow forex because major pairs are highly liquid, spreads are typically tight, and both rising and falling markets can be traded. At GLOBAL EXP GROUP, FX major pairs can be traded with leverage of up to 1:200, all from a single MetaTrader 5 account.

What are CFDs?

A CFD (Contract for Difference) lets you trade the price movement of an asset without owning the asset itself. Instead of buying physical gold or a company share, you enter a contract that pays the difference between the opening and closing price. This makes it possible to trade a wide range of markets — gold, indices, commodities, shares and crypto — from one account, and to go long (buy) or short (sell) depending on your view.

Because CFDs are leveraged products, a small price move can have a larger effect on your account — in both directions. Understanding leverage (below) is essential before trading them.

Trading on MetaTrader 5 (MT5)

MetaTrader 5 is the platform used for all trading at GLOBAL EXP GROUP. It is available for Windows, macOS, iPhone and Android, so you can manage positions from your desktop or your phone. MT5 gives you live quotes, advanced charts, dozens of technical indicators, multiple order types and a full history of your trades.

After your account is approved you receive your MT5 login details. You simply install the app, log in with your credentials and server, and your balance, open positions and trade history stay in sync everywhere — including inside your member area on this site.

Understanding leverage & margin

Leverage lets you control a larger position with a smaller amount of your own capital. For example, with 1:100 leverage, 1,000 USD of margin can control a 100,000 USD position. Margin is the portion of your funds set aside to keep a position open.

Leverage magnifies both profits and losses, so it must be used with care. At GLOBAL EXP GROUP leverage is set per product group:

  • FX major pairs — up to 1:200
  • Gold & indices — up to 1:100
  • Metals & oil — up to 1:50
  • Shares — up to 1:20
  • Crypto — up to 1:10

Managing risk

Risk management is what separates disciplined traders from gamblers. A few principles every beginner should apply:

  • Use a stop-loss on every position so a losing trade is closed automatically at a level you choose.
  • Risk only a small share of your account per trade (many traders use 1–2%).
  • Know the Stop Out level. If your margin falls too low, positions may be closed automatically. At GLOBAL EXP GROUP the Stop Out level is 20%.
  • Avoid over-leveraging. Just because high leverage is available does not mean you should use all of it.

Risk warning: Trading leveraged products (forex and CFDs) carries a high level of risk and can result in the loss of all your capital. Only trade with money you can afford to lose, and make sure you understand the risks involved.
